1Introduction

This privacy policy describes how the Prevent Duplicate Tabs Chrome extension collects, uses, and stores your data.

2Permissions Required

The extension requires the following Chrome permissions to function:

Tabs Permission

The extension uses the "tabs" permission to:

  • Monitor browser tabs for duplicate detection
  • Read tab URLs to compare for duplicates
  • Close duplicate tabs or switch to existing tabs based on your preferences

Tab URLs are accessed only for duplicate detection and are not stored permanently.

Storage Permission

The extension uses the "storage" permission to store your extension settings and statistics locally on your device.

Host Permissions (api.github.com)

The extension uses the "api.github.com" host permission to:

  • Fetch promotional content from GitHub API for display within the extension
  • Retrieve ad content in real-time without storing user data

No user data is transmitted to GitHub. The extension only fetches ad content and does not send any personal information or browsing data.

3Data Collection and Storage

Data Stored Locally

The extension stores the following data on your device:

  • Extension Settings: Enabled/disabled state, global duplicate action preferences, URL parameter handling preferences
  • Exception List: URLs and domains where duplicate tabs are allowed
  • Site-Specific Rules: Custom duplicate tab rules for individual websites
  • Statistics: Total count of duplicate tabs closed by the extension

Storage Location

All data is stored using Chrome's storage API:

  • Extension settings are stored in chrome.storage.local
  • Extension settings may be synced across your devices using Chrome's built-in sync service (chrome.storage.sync) if you have Chrome sync enabled
  • Statistics are stored only in chrome.storage.local and are not synced
  • No data is transmitted to external servers

4Data Usage

The extension uses collected data solely for the following purposes:

  • Detecting duplicate tabs by comparing URLs
  • Applying your configured rules and preferences for handling duplicates
  • Maintaining statistics for the tabs closed count
  • Synchronizing settings across your devices (if Chrome sync is enabled)

5External Content and Advertisements

The extension may display promotional content or advertisements fetched from GitHub:

  • Ad content is fetched from GitHub API (api.github.com) in real-time
  • No user data is sent to GitHub when fetching ad content
  • Ad content is cached locally using Chrome's storage API for performance
  • Clicking on advertisements will open external links in new tabs
  • Ad display can be controlled through the extension's remote configuration

6Data Sharing

The extension does not:

  • Share your browsing data or personal information with third parties
  • Transmit user data to external servers (except fetching ad content from GitHub)
  • Use analytics or tracking services to monitor your behavior
  • Collect personally identifiable information
  • Track which ads you view or click (no tracking mechanisms are implemented)

When fetching ad content from GitHub, only the ad content file is requested. No information about your browsing habits, tabs, or extension usage is transmitted.

7Data Deletion

You can delete all extension data at any time by:

  • Uninstalling the extension from Chrome
  • Clearing extension data through Chrome's extension management page

8Chrome Sync

If you have Chrome sync enabled, your extension settings (but not statistics) may be synced across your devices using Chrome's built-in sync service. This sync is controlled by your Chrome sync preferences and is not managed by this extension.
